8 Eco-conscious Gifts Anyone Will Love

It’s that time of year! (Read: the most wonderful.) As we set merrily to gift-shopping, wrapping, giving, and receiving, it’s hard to ignore that the holidays are a time characterized by a lot of waste--and that’s a real fly in our eggnog.

Enter: this blog post. We might not be able to save the world from the 2.3 million pounds of wrapping paper that ends up in American landfills every year (😵‍💫), but we can do our part to keep the earth in mind by being thoughtful with our gifting!

(Psst...if you do want to help cut down on wrapping waste, there are some creative ways to do it.)

Here are 8 gifts you can feel good about giving--and recipients can feel good about using for years to come.

Tote Bag

One of the easiest ways to enter a more sustainable lifestyle is to start using reusable bags as opposed to single-use ones. A tote bag or set of reusable grocery bags is a fantastic multi-use gift option. To up the eco-conscious ante, opt for bags made from recycled materials!

Fashion brands like Everlane and Girlfriend Collective make tote bags that are both stylish and sustainably made.

If your friend has a green thumb, we’re sure they want every opportunity to exercise it! Sites like The Sill and Bloomscape make it easy to browse a huge selection of plants with varying degrees of maintenance needs and climate preferences--not to mention tons of fun plant care accessories--all of which can be delivered directly to your recipient.

If you’re not sure exactly what type of plants or accessories to choose, many online plant shops (the two we mentioned above included) sell gift cards!

Sustainable Candles

Candles make an excellent gift for just about everyone. They smell great and add a cozy ambiance to any room. They also tend to be made with low-quality--or straight up toxic--ingredients. 😬

Thankfully, many brands have started to emerge in relatively recent years, producing luxe, reasonably priced candles made with non-toxic materials and often designed with zero-waste packaging!

One popular example is P.F. Candle Co., which uses non-toxic soy wax and recyclable glass jars for their candles. We also love Crown & Crystal--a small luxury candle company based out of Boston, MA, which produces organic soy wax candles, scented with high-quality natural oils and adorned with beautiful crystals and botanicals.

Keeping food waste to a minimum in the kitchen is a great way to live more sustainably, but switching to a low-waste lifestyle can be a huge adjustment if it’s not something you’re used to. If you have a friend or family member who is passionate about reducing waste, why not gift them a beautiful cookbook with low-waste recipes and cooking tips?

Some great options are Waste Not from the James Beard Foundation, The Zero Waste Chef by Anne-Marie Bonneau, and Eat it Up! by Sherri Brooks Vinton.

5. Reusable Travel Mug

A reusable travel mug is a great option for friends and family that are always on the go. Not only will a high-quality reusable mug help them cut down on waste from disposable cups, it also helps to keep drinks warm all day long.

Kinto and JoCo are two brands that are known for their high-quality travel mugs. If your recipient exercises frequently or just likes to stay hydrated, a special reusable water bottle may be just the ticket. LARQ makes beautiful reusable bottles that not only keep your water cold, but also clean themselves!

Home Composter

Composting is great for the environment, but it can be tricky to do at home if you don’t have a good amount of outdoor space. Uncommon Goods to save the day! They make a beautifully designed kitchen composter you can use no matter where you live. This small device turns food waste into fertilizer, and unlike larger composting bins, helps to minimize odor.

Subscription Box

What better gift is there than one that keeps giving throughout the year? Subscription boxes are incredibly convenient no matter what products they hold, but how much better when they’re packed with sustainable goodies?

One popular example is Public Goods, which offers sustainable groceries, household items, pet items, and more. Recipients can choose the items they want in their monthly deliveries. Another great option is Blueland, which delivers vegan and non-toxic cleaning products in reusable bottles. Score!

Handmade Decor

Shopping for someone with an affinity for beautiful, thoughtfully produced home decor? Perhaps a wine connoisseur who needs a stunning perch for their favorite bottles or something completely unique, customized just for them. We lovingly hand-craft every item in our shop (and custom requests!) from reclaimed and natural wood.

Gift giving is always fun, but the warm-and-fuzzies are in even greater supply when you know your gifts will be appreciated by their recipients and the earth. From all of us at Enticing Trees, happy holidays!
